The club was formed in 1990 and a team was entered in the Mayo Reserve Division. In 1991 the club entered two teams at under 18's and Junior level. The U-18s created a piece of history by winning the Mayo under 18s league on their first attempt. In 1992 the Junior team played in division 2 and by 1996 they had gained promotion to the premier division. For the first 6 years games were played at a rented pitch. In 1997 a site was purchased and this has been developed into one of the best pitches in the county. Lacken United have played here for the last five years. Lacken United hope to build dressing rooms in the near future at this site. Lacken United are now playing in the Premier League of the Mayo Soccer League.
